Avenues Online Is the Official School of USA Fencing

Avenues Online, the virtual campus of Avenues The World School, has an exciting new partner in its mission to deliver world-class education anywhere, at any time.

USA Fencing, the national governing body for the Olympic and Paralympic sport of fencing in the United States, has designated Avenues Online as its official school. The partnership is built on the benefits that Avenues Online brings to young athletes, allowing them to pursue top-tier learning while simultaneously committing fully to their athletic goals and rigorous competition schedules.

As part of the partnership, Avenues has launched a new scholarship program, providing six scholarships to Avenues Online for young fencers. Avenues Online will also serve as the title sponsor of USA Fencing’s Regional Series, which encompasses more than one hundred tournaments, and will establish a booth at all seven of USA Fencing’s national tournaments in the 2023-24 season, providing athletes and their families with opportunities to learn more about our virtual campus.

Since its founding in 2018, Avenues Online has supported hundreds of student athletes, artists and entrepreneurs to learn on a schedule that fits with their pursuit of formidable professional goals. One such student is Olympic hopeful Magda Skarbonkiewicz, an Oregon-based women’s saber fencer who attends Avenues Online while traveling the country—and world—in pursuit of her sport. As the reigning Junior Women’s Saber World Champion, this year Magda will attend competitions around the United States and in Algeria, France, Tunisia, Peru, Greece, Belgium, Korea and Georgia, hoping to secure a spot on Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Avenues Online supports Magda Skarbonkiewicz, an Oregon-based women’s saber fencer who hopes to make it to the next Olympics.

While Magda is passionate about her sport, she has no intention of letting her education fall by the wayside—an attitude that led her to Avenues Online. “As this Olympic year approaches, I realized that it would be incredibly difficult to balance school while missing every other week trying to qualify,” Magda says. “I needed flexible scheduling that would help me train, travel and compete while also completing my last year of high school. That's what Avenues Online was offering. From this I will be able to grant myself peace of mind and stay in a healthy mental mindset where I'm not constantly stressing and trying to catch up with school.”

In her school search, Magda was looking for a program that was accredited and certified by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In addition to ticking those boxes, Avenues Online offers top-tier instruction and unique electives that fit with Magda’s interest in psychology, business and animation. “I’m super committed to keeping my grades solid and putting as much effort into school as I put into my sport,” Magda says. “Education is most important for me, and being able to achieve what I want in my education while also achieving big things in fencing lets me stress less.”

The national governing body for the Olympic and Paralympic sport of fencing in the United States, USA Fencing’s mission is to grow and promote the sport of fencing, honor its rich traditions and achieve sustained competitive international excellence. “Avenues and USA Fencing both provide young people with exceptional pathways to the country's most prestigious institutions of higher education,” says Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Fencing. “The logical alliance between our organizations underscores the important ties between fencing, education and overall personal development.”

“Avenues’ commitment to providing flexible, personalized learning perfectly complements the commitment and drive we see in our fencers,” Andrews says. “We’re excited for the opportunities this partnership will bring to the USA Fencing community and look forward to a future of molding not just exceptional athletes, but well-rounded global citizens.”
