Founding Team
We are proud to present the founding team of Avenues Silicon Valley. Selected via our rigorous, seven-step recruitment process, our leaders and teachers are passionately committed to creating a school culture where student success is indivisible from student wellbeing.
Our founding team brings decades of experience in outstanding schools around the world including the Graded School in São Paulo, Shanghai American School and the American School in London; and in the Bay Area including Presidio Knolls, Menlo and Bing Nursery School. In addition, many have transferred to Silicon Valley from Avenues campuses in New York, São Paulo and Shenzhen. They bring an international perspective as well as a deep understanding of Avenues’ unique culture of learning to our newest campus.

Campus Leadership
Jeff Lippman
Head of School
Jeff Lippman is an experienced educator with a commitment to student-centered education. He began his three-decade career as a high school social studies teacher; since then, he has taken leadership roles at schools in the United States, France, Spain and Brazil. Jeff served as head of middle school at both the American School of Paris and São Paulo's Graded School, and as high school principal at the American School of Valencia in Spain. After joining Avenues in 2019, he served as head of school at Avenues Online, overseeing the evolution and growth of the program through the initial stages of the pandemic.
A native of Carmel, California, Jeff earned his B.A. and M.A. from Duke University. He also earned a degree in educational leadership through the Teachers College at Columbia University. Jeff and his wife Adriana, also an educator, have two children. With roots in the San Jose area, they are excited to relocate to California. He is an avid reader and enjoys traveling and playing tennis and basketball in his free time.

Matt Linden
Head of Early Learning Center
Matt Linden has worked in early childhood education in the Bay Area for more than 20 years. Upon completing his foundational training at Stanford's Bing Nursery School, Matt worked as a teacher at Bing and One Fifty Parker Avenue School in San Francisco, where he took on his first full-time administrative role. Matt later served as the executive director at The Little School in San Francisco, where he furthered the school's commitment to fostering an open, inclusive and diverse environment and putting relationships at the center of social-emotional learning. After joining Avenues in 2019, Matt helped to develop and lead the Avenues@Home program during the pandemic, supporting and overseeing teachers, students and families worldwide.
Matt earned his B.A. from Stanford and his M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in San Carlos with his wife, Amanda, and their two children. Matt enjoys hiking, reading, practicing yoga and playing ukulele.

Sarina Fierro
Head of Lower Division
Sarina Fierro has worked in elementary education for more than 25 years. As a teacher in New York City public schools and as a school leader in California, Sarina helped to develop numerous core academic programs. Upon completing her doctorate at the University of Southern California and after serving for fifteen years as Head of the Lower Elementary at Curtis School in Los Angeles, Sarina joined the Silicon Valley team as head of Lower Division in 2020. Most recently, Sarina has contributed to the articulation of Avenues' global problem-based math curriculum.
Sarina holds a B.S. from Syracuse University and an M.A. in elementary education from the School of Education at Manhattanville College. She earned an Ed.D in educational leadership from the University of Southern California.

Robyn Chapel
Head of Upper Division
Robyn Chapel is an experienced global educator dedicated to fostering agency and empathy in her students. A California native, Robyn began her career more than thirty years ago as a bilingual social studies teacher in the Bay Area before moving abroad and serving in leadership roles in Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom. Robyn most recently served as the director of teaching and learning at the American School in London and has served as the high school division head at both the American School of Valencia in Spain and the American School Foundation in Mexico City. Robyn returned to the Bay Area to join the founding leadership team of Avenues Silicon Valley in 2020.
Robyn earned her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz and her M.A. from Stanford University. Robyn lives in San Jose with her partner Miguel and their two children. Robyn loves swimming, reading, discovering original recipes and traveling to new places.

Tamar Adegbile
Director of Student Wellbeing and College Counseling
Tamar Adegbile brings more than two decades of college counseling experience to Avenues Silicon Valley. Prior to joining Avenues, Tamar served as the director of college counseling at the Cate School in Carpinteria, CA. Previously, she worked for 12 years as an upper school dean at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. A native of New York, Tamar also served on the college counseling team at Riverdale Country School. She began her career in college admissions, with positions at Columbia University and Vassar College.
Tamar earned her B.A. from Vassar College and is currently pursuing her M.A. in educational leadership through the Teachers College at Columbia University. Tamar and her husband Dipo have two sons. She loves music, travel, hiking, barre and boot camp classes and spicy food.

Sarah Markhovsky
Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management
Sarah joins Avenues from the Dallas-based Greenhill School—an independent school serving more than 1,300 students in pre-k through 12th grade—where she served as director of admissions since 2014. Prior to her time at Greenhill, Sarah spent seven years at the Severn School outside of Washington D.C., first as the associate director of college counseling before being promoted to director of college counseling. She began her career in admissions at her alma mater, the University of Chicago, where she served as the assistant director of college admissions for four years. In addition to her extensive experience in admissions, Sarah brings strong leadership skills and commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive community to Avenues Silicon Valley.
A native of the Washington D.C. area, Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree from Macalester College and her master’s degree from the University of Chicago. Before starting her career in education, Sarah was a professional actress and singer working with film and theater companies in Minneapolis, Chicago and New York. She remains an avid theater lover and is also a devoted Star Wars fan. Sarah and her husband Russ have two children.

Amrit Chima
Director of Operations and Administration
Amrit Chima joins the Avenues Silicon Valley team after serving as Dean of Operations with Summit Public Schools, a leading charter network with schools in California and Washington. Prior to her time at Summit, Amrit was part of the founding Upper School faculty team at the Nueva School. In her role as Director of Athletics, she grew the program from 5 teams to 19 teams in its first four years. Over the past 15 years, she has worked in public and independent schools, from PK-12 to the university level, as a teacher, coach, mentor, and administrator.
Amrit earned her B.A. at Stanford University, where she was a member of the women's field hockey team. She has an M.S. from Miami University (OH). Outside of work, Amrit dabbles in woodworking, enjoys staying active, and considers herself an aspiring vegetable gardener.

Mike Maccarone
Global Academic Dean
Mike Maccarone joined Avenues in 2012 as a founding faculty member of the New York campus, where he served as a science teacher and curriculum specialist for several years before moving into his current role as global academic dean. Over the past decade, in addition to classroom teaching, Mike has taken leading roles in the launch of Avenues campuses in São Paulo, Shenzhen and Online, working across teacher development and training, curriculum innovation and implementation, and facilities design. He also led multiple study abroad programs and “Os Primeiros,” a founding class-style program offered to 9th grade students enrolled for Avenues São Paulo’s first year.
Mike began his career as a public school math, science and engineering teacher with Newark Public Schools, New Jersey. He holds degrees in both physics and mathematics. Outside of his teaching practice, Mike is a member of NASA's Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors program, through which he has flown on missions with NASA's SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy), and enjoys listening to and playing live music.

Associate Division Head
Mariana joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues São Paulo, where she was a founding faculty member, serving on several grade-level teams and as a learning guide in the Primary Division. Previously, Mariana taught and served as a literacy specialist and instructional coach at the Escola Americana de Campinas in São Paulo.
Mariana holds an M.A. in education from Buffalo State University of New York and a B.S. in elementary education from Brigham Young University. In her free time, she enjoys trying out new recipes to enjoy with her husband and new baby.

Corey Watlington
Associate Division Head
Corey joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues New York, where he has supported both middle and upper grades programs as an associate division head. His 20+ year career in education has spanned inner-city schools in Chicago to international schools in a diverse range of cities including São Paulo, Mumbai and Dhaka. In Rio de Janeiro, he was a founding member of the leadership team at Escola Eleva, serving as the director of teaching and learning. In that capacity, he led the professional development of over 200 faculty members.
Corey holds an M.S.Ed in teacher leadership from Northwestern University as well as a B.A. in political science and philosophy from Boston College. In his free time, Corey enjoys traveling, practicing yoga and swimming laps.

Ryan Sawtell
Associate Division Head
Ryan joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues São Paulo, where he was a founding faculty member and a lead teacher for “Os Primeiros,” a project-based experience similar to the Founding Class Program in Silicon Valley. He went on to serve as Mastery coordinator and then as associate division head in the Secondary Division. In his 20-year career in secondary education, Ryan has also taught Spanish, art and architecture, and theory of knowledge in public schools in Minnesota, Texas and New York, while taking on roles in curriculum development and academic coordination.
He earned his B.A. from Bethel University and M.Ed. from the University of North Texas, focusing on curriculum and instruction. Outside the classroom, Ryan's interests include biking, spicy cuisine, old maps, and taking road trips with his partner and daughter.

Jamie Tuttle
Dean of Students
Jamie Tuttle joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues Online, where he served as a dean of students for grades 6–9, and from Avenues São Paulo, where he was a founding faculty member. He brings nearly 20 years of experience to the role of dean, having served as school counselor and guidance director in middle schools including Clarke Middle School in Athens, Georgia; Graded: The American School of São Paulo; and Mason Preparatory School in Charleston, South Carolina. Jamie is passionate about ensuring that every student feels a sense of belonging at school and is committed to facilitating safe and healthy communication between students, parents and faculty.
Jamie earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from the College of Charleston and a master’s degree in education with a concentration in school counseling from the University of Georgia. In his free time, Jamie enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, as well as mountain biking, surfing and seeing live music.

Dean of Students
Sam de Silva joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues São Paulo, where she served as a dean of students. As a founding faculty member, Sam taught on the “Os Primeiros” program for the founding class of Avenues São Paulo. In that role, Sam helped to shape a positive school culture and create a safe and welcoming environment for students. She is passionate about helping students explore their interests, expand their worldviews and embrace the part of the Avenues mission statement that asks them to be “emotionally unafraid.” Prior to joining Avenues, she taught science and health at Harding University High School in North Carolina and the United Nations International School in New York.
Sam holds a degree in the history and philosophy of science and recently earned a master's certificate in sexuality education from the University of Michigan. Sam enjoys sewing and reading, and looks forward to camping in California with her partner and daughter.

Celso Cárdenas
Dean of Students
Born and raised in La Villita on the Southwest Side of Chicago, Celso Cárdenas has dedicated his career to supporting disadvantaged communities and expanding inclusion for all students. He joins Avenues from Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, where from 2015 he served as an upper school dean, as well as faculty advisor to LatinX and LGBT student groups. Previously, he worked as associate director of college counseling at Francis W. Parker School in Chicago. He is an elected member of College Board’s financial assistance assembly council and serves on the educational advisory board for the Point Foundation, the country’s largest scholarship-granting non-profit for LGBTQ+ students.
Celso received a B.A. in Latino studies from the University of Michigan and holds an M.A. in Community Counseling. In spring 2023, he will complete his doctoral program in educational leadership at the University of Southern California, where he also served as lead admissions coach for the Bovard Scholars program, a college access program for high-achieving, low-income students.

Hannah Cooper
Director of Community Engagement
Hannah joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Fremont High School, where she helped develop the English Language Development (ELD) program and worked as a lead GOALS (Growing Our Academic Language Skills) teacher. Hannah began her journey in education as a volunteer in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, serving for two years at schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and San Jose, California. In addition to her work as an educator, she has served as a mentor on leadership travel programs in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Florida. Hannah is passionate about service learning, experiential education and relationship building and is excited to bring her unique experience to bear on community engagement at Avenues.
Hannah earned an M.A. in teaching and a single subject credential in English from Santa Clara University. While earning her degree, she also worked as a live-in spirituality facilitator, supporting undergraduate students throughout their college experience. In her free time, Hannah enjoys writing poetry, hiking, salsa dancing and trying new vegan recipes.

Shaun Burl
Athletic Director
Shaun Burl joins Avenues Silicon Valley after fifteen years of working in youth athletics in the Pacific Northwest. He spent the last decade at Seattle Academy, including as an athletic director for the past seven years. He also held roles as a PE teacher, multi-sport coach and grade-level coordinator. Previously, Shaun worked with a diverse population of students in both private and public settings, focused on mental health and community building. Having grown up in the Bay Area in a family of teachers and coaches, Shaun is excited to return to the area to build a dynamic athletic program at Avenues Silicon Valley.
Shaun was a collegiate athlete at Seattle University, where he earned his B.A. in sociology. He also holds an M.A. in coaching and athletic administration from University of Concordia Irvine. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, as well as playing golf and basketball.

Carolyn Woulfe
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Carolyn began her teaching career in Queensland, Australia. Since moving overseas with her family in 2007, she has taught and held leadership positions at Hong Kong International School, the International School of Prague, and most recently, the American School in London, where she was an 8th grade English teacher and team leader.
Carolyn holds a B.A. from the University of Queensland and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching from Queensland University of Technology. Carolyn also earned an M.A. in creative writing from Roehampton University in London, where she was awarded the Extended Dissertation prize. She enjoys adventure, whether it be exploring a new culture, rappelling off a building, or getting lost in a good book.

Jessica Li
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Jessica joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Presidio Knolls School in San Francisco, where she was a middle school project teacher. In that capacity, Jessica co-designed and delivered a project-based curriculum within a Mandarin language immersion program. Jessica’s prior experience includes teaching English as a second language, both at an underprivileged elementary school in Boston and to the Chinese National Women’s Youth Ice Hockey Team. Passionate about developing empathy, social responsibility and integrity in her students, Jessica is a progressive educator who enjoys working in diverse cultural and linguistic environments.
Jessica earned her bachelor’s degree in bilingual education from Boston University and her master’s in international education policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In her spare time, Jessica enjoys tending her houseplants and replicating Chinese family recipes in the kitchen.

Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Lisa joins Avenues Silicon Valley after ten years at Shanghai American School, where she served as the 6th grade science teacher and most recently the Microcampus Coordinator. As a science teacher, Lisa focused on opening her students’ eyes and minds to the fun, creativity and wonder of science. In her last two years in Shanghai, Lisa and her husband Matt led the school’s Microcampus program, which brings students to rural areas of China for experiential education. In that capacity, Lisa designed and delivered experiences that enabled students to grow in ways that transcend the traditional classroom.
Lisa earned her B.S. from Lafayette College and her M.S. from New York University. In her free time, Lisa enjoys plant-based cooking, being active and exploring new places with her husband.

Heather Hall
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Heather brings more than two decades of teaching experience to Avenues Silicon Valley, having taught across all grade levels, from early childhood to high school. For the last eight years, she has worked at international schools in the Caribbean, India and the Middle East. Heather grew up in the Bay Area and began her teaching career in San Francisco and Oakland. In addition to teaching art, she has also taught English, social studies and yearbook. Throughout her career she has been an advocate of a trans-disciplinary, project-based approach to education.
Heather earned her B.A. in art history from Fordham University and her M.A. in art education from the Academy of Art University. She is an avid traveler, amateur photographer and art lover.

Karina Sanghikian
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Karina joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues São Paulo, where she was part of the founding team that launched the campus in 2018. At Avenues, she taught kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grade. As a literacy learning guide, Karina also provided coaching for teachers and led workshops related to literacy and language acquisition across divisions. Before joining Avenues, she taught for more than 15 years at international schools in São Paulo. Passionate about language learning, Karina is a published author, speaks several languages and is always seeking to learn more about different cultures.
Karina holds a B.A. in early childhood education, as well as a B.A. in English language and literature from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, Brazil. She also earned a graduate diploma in linguistics and second language acquisition. In her spare time, Karina enjoys playing the guitar and listening to rock music.

James Knoebber
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
James brings more than 15 years of education experience to Avenues Silicon Valley, having worked in international schools in California, the Caribbean, India and the Middle East. He has taught American and world history, economics, government, service learning and philosophy to students from 7th to 12th grade. James takes a trans-disciplinary approach to his teaching practice, seeking authentic ways for students to think about and engage with social justice issues in the world around them. Before he became an educator, he worked in finance, technology and community organizing in the Bay Area.
James holds a B.A. in business administration from Loyola Marymount University and an M.A. in American and world history from San Francisco State University.

Ana Paula Giorgi
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Ana Paula joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues São Paulo, where she served as a founding faculty member. As one of the first teachers to join the campus in 2018, Ana Paula taught on the “Os Primeiros” program–progenitor of Avenues Silicon Valley’s Founding Class Program–and then went on to serve as a science teacher in both the Primary and Secondary Divisions. She taught a range of classes including advanced chemistry, advanced biology, conservation science and the senior seminar in science and engineering. Before becoming an educator, Ana Paula spent more than 20 years working as a field biologist specializing in conservation science.
Ana Paula earned a Ph.D. in geography from the University of California Los Angeles. She also holds a B.A. in biology and a master's degree in applied ecology, environmental education and freshwater resources, both from the University of São Paulo. She loves spending time with family and friends, and is always looking for new skateboard parks and outdoor adventures.

Triple Oswald
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Triple joins Avenues from The Nueva School, where he began his teaching career after working for several years as a mechanical designer in the industry. At Nueva, Triple served as Innovation Lab Manager and also established an organization that connects US-based engineers with social-impact organizations overseas to co-design technology with under-resourced communities. He has taught science, engineering and design thinking to students ages five to fifty-five, and loves watching people grow in empathy, critical thinking and creative confidence.
Triple was born and raised in Texas, but has lived in Silicon Valley for over 10 years. He graduated from Stanford University with a degree in mechanical engineering and a specialization in human-centered design. In his free time, Triple likes building gifts for family and friends, reading and writing poetry, running, hosting creative community gatherings and traveling internationally.

Kelsey Knutson
Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
Kelsey joins Avenues from Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked as a social studies teacher, director of international programs, and a diversity, equity and inclusion training leader and facilitator. In 2022, Kelsey completed a doctoral fellowship in teacher development and digital education policy at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, and until spring 2023 helped edit educational policy publications for UNESCO in Santiago, Chile. Kelsey’s first teaching experience was in a small farming village in Western Kenya. She continues to engage with communities around the world during summer breaks, supporting exchanges and professional development in countries from Myanmar to Colombia, and serving as a consultant for a global youth leadership program.
Kelsey has a B.A. in global studies: human rights and justice from the University of Minnesota, an M.Ed. from Arizona State University and is completing an Ed.D in education policy, organization and leadership, with dual concentrations in global education and diversity and equity, at the University of Illinois.

Courteney Spence
Math Teacher
Courteney joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Avenues New York, where he taught math, including Introduction to Calculus and Calculus, from 2019. He began his teaching career in Hong Kong, at the Korean International School, where he taught math to a wide range of ages and coached squash.
Courteney holds a BSc in mathematics from Loughborough University and a postgraduate certificate of education from the University of South Africa (UNISA). In his free time, he enjoys playing sports, especially squash, golf and soccer. He is looking forward to moving to the Bay Area with his family and exploring the hiking trails of Northern California.

Molly Hasegawa
Math Teacher
Molly joins Avenues Silicon Valley from the Nueva School, where she served as a 5th and 6th grade math teacher and advisor. As an educator, Molly focuses on building students' persistence as problem solvers and fostering an environment where all students see themselves as mathematicians. She is passionate about helping students see the place of mathematics in their lives and the world around them.
Molly earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and psychology from Pitzer College and her master’s in secondary math education from Chaminade University. In her free time, Molly enjoys knitting, reading and exploring local coffee shops with her husband.

Zoe Jantzen
Math Teacher
Zoe joins Avenues after serving for five years as the 7th grade homeroom and grades 6–8 math teacher at Saint Brigid School in San Francisco. In her math classroom, Zoe focuses on providing students with meaningful and engaging educational experiences that create excitement about learning. At Saint Brigid’s she was also responsible for the development of the student leadership team, which provided students with opportunities to develop leadership skills while creating positive change in their community.
Zoe earned both her B.S. and her M.A. from the University of San Francisco. In her free time, Zoe enjoys baking, hiking and camping with her dog and partner.
Zoe Jantzen
Elle Lyu
Chinese Teacher
Elle joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Presidio Knolls School in San Francisco, where she taught Mandarin Chinese for four years. At Presidio Knolls, she co-developed and implemented an interdisciplinary, project-based Mandarin immersion curriculum for 5th grade students. In her career so far, Elle has taught languages to a diverse range of students, from young children to adults. Elle incorporates authentic experiences into her classes to develop students’ communication skills and foster their understanding of Chinese culture. She strives to equip her students with the skills and inspiration to continue their language learning journey outside the classroom.
Elle earned her B.A. from Xihua University in Chengdu, China and her M.Ed from State University of New York at Buffalo. Outside of teaching, Elle enjoys exploring museums and outdoor adventures including hiking, backpacking and mountain biking.

Chinese Teacher
Lucy joins Avenues Silicon Valley from Yew Chung International School-Silicon Valley, where she taught Mandarin Chinese for ten years. At YCIS, she co-developed the Mandarin curriculum to meet national professional standards, designed and implemented project-based learning units for middle school and applied differentiated instruction to meet the needs of individual students. Lucy strives to create a multilingual classroom environment where all students can fulfill their own unique potential. She is committed to helping students become lifelong learners who are independent, confident and globally competent.
Lucy earned her M.Ed from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In her free time, she enjoys baking, traveling and Chinese folk dance.

Katy Garnier
Director of iLab & Interdisciplinary Project Teacher
A lifelong maker, storyteller and outdoor enthusiast, Katy Garnier joined Avenues New York as the founding director of the iLab in 2012. Since then, she has led the development of Avenues’ design and engineering curriculum and expanded the New York iLab program into two state-of-the-art makerspaces. Prior to joining Avenues, Katy split her time between teaching and developing innovative creative technology projects. For over 15 years she served as an adjunct professor at Parsons: The New School for Design and CUNY's New York City College of Technology, where she taught a wide range of media and technology courses. Simultaneously, she worked on the development of unique interactive experiences for diverse audiences and clientele. Earlier in her career, she held such diverse roles as comic book editor, animator and interactive project manager for companies such as DC Comics, and the proto-social media websites tripod.com and angelfire.com.
Katy received a BFA in dramatic writing from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and an MFA in design and technology from Parsons: The New School for Design. Outside of work, Katy is an avid bike commuter, hiker, camper, knitter and gamer. She and her husband, Jay, a tech entrepreneur, have two children.
