MIDDLE GRADES 

The pre-adolescent years are a time of dynamic transition and discovery for students. With that in mind, we designed our middle grades (Grades 6-9) program to develop foundational skills, nurture independence, and provide plentiful opportunities for the discovery of passions and strengths. Students benefit from a combination of rigorous academics, individualized social-emotional support and a robust menu of co- and extracurricular activities, which build their confidence and prepare them for even greater agency in their high school years. ABOUT THE ROLE 

At Avenues, our students will develop Chinese language skills that will allow them to live flourishing professional and personal lives in China. Classes are discussion-based, promoting inquiry, exploration, and presentation. We expect students to write well and frequently, and engage in independent project work. You will also:   

• Collaborate intensively and daily with colleagues to design learning outcomes, monitor growth, and thoughtfully address individual student needs  
• Deeply connect with students, colleagues and parents to uphold a culture of welcome, safety and respect

WHAT YOU"LL BRING

• At least 3 years of experience teaching Chinese literature and literacy as a first language to students from grades 6-9 with a strong track record of student learning and growth
• Familiar with and proficient in interdisciplinary and project-based teaching     
• A strong ability to develop middle grades students into passionate, curious and skillful readers and writers  
• Experience with curriculum development and innovative pedagogy  
• Deep knowledge of, and an infectious passion for, literature and the tools of literary analysis  
• Profound commitment to ensuring and nurturing children's wellbeing  
• Highly effective collaborator, eager to listen deeply, contribute to a team and achieve goals together  
• Dedication to learning and developing the craft of teaching  
• Very resourceful and adaptive, eager to embrace constant change, growth and learning    
• Bachelor's degree; graduate degree in education or related field is ideal   
• Native-level Chinese speaker with professional fluency in English
